Photo Hunt 37: Smelly

Today's hunt is anything "smelly". Let me post something which has a strong, fishy odor. What do you know, it's a fish. Others do not like the smell of this specially while it's being cooked. They find it too strong and the smell lingers and sticks to one's clothes long after the frying is done. Me, I like the smell of cooked dried fish. It wets my appetite.

My favorite part is the head. Eeeeww, I can hear some of the readers saying that :D But well, that part of the fish is the most tasty. I don't have any scientific explanation why.

One of the traditional breakfasts of Filipinos are scrambled eggs, milk/coffee, sinangag (fried rice) and tuyo (salted dried herring). Tuyo is the Tagalog term for dry. There are many kinds of dried fish but tuyo is the most popular for breakfast. I am familiar with tuyo variants such as tonsoy and lapad which I buy in packs in supermarkets. Mind you though, there are pastas which use dried salted fish flakes as one of the main ingredients. My husband loves tuyo in olive oil, garlic and some chilies.

Healthy lifestyle is popular nowadays and that is good. There's fresh fruits, oatmeal, wheat bread for breakfast. But generally, Filipinos are rice eaters that even during breakfast, expect a plateful of rice in most households. And expect tuyo to always be a part of a typical Filipino breakfast.

Hi Lynn. I love tuyo for breakfast with scrambled eggs and fried rice. It's almost lunch and I'm getting hungry. :)

True, the tastiest part of the fish is the head but I've never tried it before. I remember I would always give the head of the fish to my mom or dad. They would eat it with gusto.

Happy weekend Lynn!

I had tuyo with rice for breakfast when I was staying with a Filipino friend in Manila. It tasted yummy. I missed it now, also the yummy pandesal bread. :(

Yes, again, I am sure this has to be an acquired taste that one needs to be grown up on but I just could not see myself wanting to eat this... awesome picture and a great writeup!

hey lynn!
Wow!!! I miss tuyo!!! Will be eating lots of those when I get home.. .^-^

Actually, before I flew in here, we went to Manila Zoo... and I must admit, I almost cried because it looks like the government has been neglecting that...

Yes, no country is perfect... but at least even if some of the toilets here smell... they don't run out of toilet paper! ^-^

ipanema said...

i love tuyo! but be careful with the salt though.

Actually, you've almost won me over :) It's not really so strange to have fish for breakfast. Kippers (dried smoked herring or mackerel) used to be a breakfast dish in the UK.

Thanks for visiting mine :)

Fish for breakfast? Not sure I can take such a powerful smell so early.

Whoa those fishes in your photo really look like having a strong smell. It's weird that even through photo I can feel that...

We had neighbours (when I lived in Australia) that used to always dry their fish in the sun. It never smelt great but now I wish I had been brave enough to try it.

I love salted fish especially those big piece with lots of flesh minus the bones. I just used that in my fried rice for dinner today. It tasted real good with that special aroma and taste. Nice shot this week.

Eww. yuck, fish!

Smelly? It a fishy sort of way, sure. Gosh, though, the prospect of fish and rice for breakfast sounds awfully good. If I try it, I'll carry my breath mints to work!

Interesting, Lynn. I love dried fish too but not particularly tuyo, too smelly for my sensitive olfactory nerves. I love more the smoked fish, fresh bangus daing or danggit. All smelly. Have you tried the tilanggit? Baby tilapia dried ala danggit? Sarap! Or the big salted dried fish to be eaten with kalamansi and melted butter.

Have a tasty Sunday! :)

Great choice for The Hunt. I like fish but not the heads! Thanks for dropping by.

What a pretty photo, Lynn, but I can't say that I am at all fond of the idea of eating a fish's head. This was a very interesting read. I do love the smell of fish, though. Forgive me for taking so long to visit you. You are so sweet, and I always appreciate your comments at Pollywog Creek. BTW, I read somewhere that not all guava varieties have the same offensive smell that ours does. Have a great week, dear friend.

Lynn, sadly I can't see photos but I can imagine the smell of dried fish. I love dried fish with rice porridge and yes, also in fried rice and vegie curries.

To a caucasian, the smell of dried fish is like that of a dead rat! :)
